Playaz - Bunyan - Act 3

EXT. RUCKER PARK - DAY

Pablo, Bunyan, Bones, Hans, Jerry, and Priest run on the
court. The stands are full and cheering. DJ stands by his
turntables.

DJ
Do we have a game or what.

Jerry dribbles the ball against Bones.

Jerry takes a fall-away with Bones in his face. The shot
bricks off the rim.

Bunyan jumps and grabs the rebound.

Bunyan outlets to Pablo.

Pablo dribbles up the ball.

Pablo dribbles in the frontcourt, but gets trapped by Priest
and Hans.

Pablo passes to Bunyan.

Bunyan shoots from 22 feet out. The ball bounces off the
rim. Pablo frowns.

Hans grabs the rebound.

PABLO
Yo, timeout.

PRIEST
Timeout?

PABLO
Yo, new player here. Give me
second.

Pablo and Bones walk to Bunyan, who hangs his head.

BUNYAN
Sorry, I'm not used to the rim
being...

PABLO
No, forget that. What are you
doing shooting threes?

BUNYAN
Well, I was open...

PABLO
But you're our only big man. You
should be dunking!

BONES
Hey, you got good hops. Just get
open under the rim and you'll get
the rock. Pablo's the best at
that.

PABLO
Yeah, and block their shots if you
can, ok?

BUNYAN
Ye...yeah, ok.

Bones slaps Bunyan on the back.

BONES
Don't worry, we can take these
guys.

Bones, Pablo, and Bunyan go on defense. Jerry brings up the
ball.

The Three Old Men seem disappointed.

SAL
The big man looks like a stiff.

LARRY
Give him a minute to get used to
the court. I have faith.

Jerry passes the ball to Hans, being guarded by Pablo.

Hans out-jumps Pablo and takes a jumper.

Bunyan flies in from nowhere and snatches the ball out of the
sky.

The crowd erupts. Skittles jumps around on the sideline.

LARRY
See, what'd I tell you.

RUSSELL
Best white boy hops since Bill
Walton. Who says white men can't
jump?

Pablo brings up the ball.

Bunyan pushes against Priest under the hoop.

Bunyan spins and gets around Priest.

Pablo tosses the ball high above the rim. Bunyan's eyes grow
wide.

Bunyan skies into the air and grabs the ball over Priest's
outstreched arm.

Bunyan slams the ball over Priest with both hands.

The crowd erupts.

DJ
Paul Bunyan just posterized you,
Priest.

Priest glares at DJ as he moves into the front court.

PRIEST
Gimme the rock.

Priest posts up against Bunyan, knocking him back.

BUNYAN
Oooff.

Hans passes the ball to Priest.

Priest lowers his shoulder into Bunyan and drives forward,
knocking Bunyan of his feet.

Priest dunks the ball over Bunyan.

PRIEST
Sit down, rookie.

Priest jogs down the court. Bones and Pablo stand around
Bunyan as he stands.

BUNYAN
Can he do that?

BONES
I don't see no ref.

Bunyan grits his teeth.

Pablo brings up the ball.

Bunyan posts up against Priest and raises his hand. Pablo
passes to Bunyan.

Bunyan leans against Priest.

PRIEST
You're gonna need to do better than
that.

Priest pushes Bunyan, knocking him forward.

PRIEST
No foul, let's play.

Bunyan backs into Priest, but Priest holds him off.

PRIEST
That all you got.

As Bunyan leans into Priest, Hans runs in and double-teams
Bunyan. Bunyan covers the ball.

A mass of arms surround Bunyan.

GRANDPA (V.O.)
You could really play with these
guys.

Bunyan looks around Hans and sees Bones wide open.

GRANDPA (V.O.)
If you learn to play smart, you'll
be fine.

Bunyan jumps high in the air, over Priest and Hans. Bunyan
spins and passes to Bones.

Bones shoots and nails the jumper.

The crowd cheers.

Jerry brings up the ball. Priest and Jerry make eye contact
and nod.

Priest posts up against Bunyan.

PRIEST
You can't stop me.

Jerry runs around Pablo and passes the ball to Priest.

Priest smirks at Bunyan.

Priest lowers his shoulder and drives. Bunyan holds out a
hand to guide Priest, but steps out of the way.

Priest staggers forward and falls off balance .

Bunyan steals the ball from Priest as Priest falls down.

Bunyan baseball passes the ball and Bones catches it.

Bones races down the court and dunks the ball.

DJ
And that's game!

The crowd cheers.

Bunyan extends his hand to Priest.

Priest reaches up and Bunyan helps Priest to his feet.

Hans and Jerry walk up to Bunyan.

JERRY
Good game, Paul Bunyan.

PRIEST
Yeah, good game.

BUNYAN
Thanks, really, thanks for letting
me play.

HANS
You're a good player. Come out
anytime. What is your name again?

BUNYAN
My name's Paul.

Jerry and Hans laugh. Priest frowns and turns away.

JERRY
Haha, so you are Paul Bunyan.

Bunyan laughs and walks to Pablo and Bones, who stand under
the hoop.

BUNYAN
How'd I look out there.

BONES
Man, you look terrible. With your
clothes, you hair, your headband,
man, your shorts...

PABLO
But you play great, and hey, that's
all that really matters on this
court.

Bunyan laughs as he reaches up and touches the backboard.

BUNYAN
Are the rims a little low here?

PABLO
No, they're 10 feet, regulation.
You're the one who's huge.

BUNYAN
Really...

Bunyan looks to the side like he's thinking.

MONTAGE - VARIOUS

Grandpa holding the newspaper that looks smaller than normal.

Bunyan's dad holding the soda bottle that looks smaller than
normal.

Bunyan's dad holding the orange basketball, which looks
smaller than normal.



INT. BUNYAN'S CABIN - DAY

Grandpa sits with a cup of coffee. Bunyan's dad paces about.

GRANDPA
How long till he realizes that you
put that rim 12 feet up there?

Grandpa points out the window at

BUNYAN'S DAD
Probably about the same time he
realizes that his family's a bunch
of giants.

Bunyan sits down on a chair.

BUNYAN'S DAD
And that his Dad makes custom
furniture.

GRANDPA
Well, he'll be fine don't worry.

Grandpa walks away.

Bunyan's Dad lifts the remote control and turns on the TV.
The TV shows, "Streetball."

DJ (V.O.)
(muffled)
Check out the new guy, the man they
call Bunyan.

On the TV, Bunyan jumps into the air, catches the basketball,
and alley-oop slams the ball.

Bunyan's dad smiles.

FADE OUT.
