Playaz - Pablo - Act 2

EXT. CITY STREETS - DAY

Bunyan and Pablo walk down the street. Bunyan looks at a
college brochure. Bunyan walks tall and Pablo hunches over a
little.

BUNYAN
Wow, this is cool. One coach said
he'd guarantee me a full ride if I
got my scores. All meals and
everything included. Check out
these rooms.

Bunyan shows a college brochure with a picture of a fancy
suite.

PABLO
Yeah, that's great.

BUNYAN
Man, I don't know what I'm going to
do. Every school looks great.
How'd you handle this?

PABLO
Huh?

Bunyan and Pablo stop.

BUNYAN
You know, all this recruiting and
scholarships and stuff.

PABLO
I didn't.

Pablo starts walking. Bunyan chases after him.

BUNYAN
Nah, you're kidding, right? Come
on.

PABLO
Nope.

BUNYAN
But, you're a great player. You've
got moves and passes and...

Pablo stops and glares up at Bunyan.

PABLO
And I got nothing, ok!? Zero, zip,
nada. No one wants a fat, slow
point guard, even if I can find the
open man.

BUNYAN
But...

PABLO
Look at you, man. You're a freak.
You're as tall as the rim and can
jump out of the gym. But you're
the freak of nature they're all
looking for.

Pablo storms away from Bunyan.



EXT. PIZZA STAND - DAY

Pablo sits on a bench with a piece of pizza. Pablo seems
angry. People walk about around Pablo or wait in line at the
window.

Pablo tears into his pizza and chews quickly.

Pablo takes another bite.

Pablo reaches into his pocket and takes out a candy bar.

BONES (O.S.)
Yo, figured I'd find you here.

Pablo looks to the side and sees Bones standing by the bench.

Pablo nods to Bones.

Bones sits down next to Pablo.

Pablo takes a bit of his candy bar.

Bones takes the pizza from Pablo and takes a bite.

Bones and Pablo chew.

PABLO
Bunyan ok?

BONES
Yeah, he just wants to know that
you're ok.

Pablo takes another bite of his candy bar.

PABLO
You know, I shouldn't let this get
me, but it's hard, you know?

Bones takes the candy bar from Pablo and takes a bite.

PABLO (CONT'D)
I mean, you got your brain,
Bunyan's a monster, but what do I
got? Nada.

BONES
Man, don't say that. You're my
boy, and you're the best guy I
know. That ain't all, you know the
game better than anyone. Period.
And that ain't nothing.

PABLO
Whatever.

Bones jumps to his feet.

BONES
Come on.

Pablo stands.

PABLO
Where we going?

BONES
I'm gonna prove to you that those
scouts don't know jack.



EXT. RUCKER PARK - DAY

Jerry and other players run on the court. DJ, the three old
men, Skittles, Cheryl, and others sit around the court.

Jerry drives past several defenders and throws up a wild
layup. The ball bounces around and through the hoop. DJ
holds a mic.

DJ
Wooo! My man, Jerry, going fast
forward.

Pablo and Bones enter the park and walk up to Bunyan.

BONES
Chill for a second.

Bones walks to the sideline, leaving Pablo and Bunyan.

PABLO
Sorry about tripping out earlier.

BUNYAN
Hey, it's cool.

On the court, Jerry drives and scores another layup.

The crowd cheers and DJ steps onto the court.

DJ
And that's eleven. See ya.

Jerry slaps hi-fives as Bones walks onto the court.

DJ (CONT'D)
My man! Give it up for Bones!

Bones and DJ hug. Bones takes the microphone from DJ.

BONES
Yo, can y'all help me out for a
second.

Everyone looks at Bones.

BONES (CONT'D)
Now, see, I'm trying to prove
something to my friend Pablo. So,
what I need a game to eleven.
We'll play you 5 on 3. We'll even
spot you seven points.

Jerry looks around and smirks.

BONES (CONT'D)
Oh yeah, me and the big man can't
shoot in the paint. Anyone want to
take down the king of this court?

JERRY
Yeah, we play. Hope you like
losing.

Bones and Jerry shake hands.

Pablo and Bunyan look confused.

BUNYAN
Does he know what he's doing?

PABLO
He's the smartest guy I know.

Pablo walks onto the court. The crowd cheers.

Pablo walks to the sideline and makes eye contact with
Skittles.

Pablo tosses a pack of candy to Skittles. Skittles looks at
the candy - they're Skittles.

Skittles jumps around.

Pablo smiles and walks to Bones and Bunyan.

BONES
Good karma from the kid?

PABLO
Man, we'll need all the karma we
can get.

BONES
No, we just need you to play some
ball.



EXT. RUCKER PARK - MOMENTS LATER

Pablo dribbles the ball up the court. Jerry guards Pablo.

JERRY
Your friend crazy. No way you guys
beat us.

PABLO
Maybe you're right, but I'm gonna
play some basketball.

Pablo flips the ball behind his back.

Bones uses Bunyan as a screen and does a catch-and-shoot
behind him - nothing but net.

Pablo smirks at Jerry.

MONTAGE - RUCKER PARK

Jerry drives around Bones and shoots, but Bunyan blocks the
shot.

Jerry no-look passes to Bones, who does a catch-and-shoot.

The ball goes through the hoop.

Bones uses Jerry as a screen and shoot.

The ball goes through the hoop.

Bunyan blocks a shot.

Jerry drives down the lane and tosses the ball backwards.
Bones catches the ball and takes a long jumper.

The ball goes through the hoop.

The ball goes through the hoop again.



EXT. RUCKER PARK - DAY

Pablo dribbles on the right wing. Jerry grits his teeth as
he guards Pablo.

Pablo bounces the ball to Bunyan.

The defense swarms Bunyan.

Pablo moves to the top of the key, setting a screen for
Bones.

Pablo whistles.

Bones runs next to Pablo, and his defender bumps into Pablo.

BONES
Corner.

Bunyan passes the ball to the corner.

Bones catches the ball and shoots immediately, with his
defender just out of reach.

The ball swishes through the hoops.

The crowd cheers.

DJ
Eleven to nine, or well, eleven to
two. That's my boy, Bones.

Jerry looks at the ground as Pablo walks by.

BONES
That's what I'm talking about,
Pablo.

Pablo walks to Bones and slaps a hi-five.

Jerry grits his teeth.

JERRY
Hey, fat boy.

Pablo turns around and glares at Jerry.

JERRY (CONT'D)
So, what you saying is basketball
is doing nothing while your buddies
score.

PABLO
What?

JERRY
Of course you win. You have
sharpshooter and walking tree on
your team. What idiot lose with
that?

Bones and Bunyan look at each other and shrug.

BONES
Yo, he might have a point.

JERRY
One more game, but no more all-star
team for you. Let's see fat boy
play basketball. What do you say?

All eyes turn to Pablo.
